America's Christmas Channel

Christmas is hard for many people, paradoxical as that may seem. For many it is a time of loneliness, a reflection of failure or loss. And then there’s the news. It’s usually depressing. But here’s something cheerful to consider: America’s Christmas Channel UP TV provides uplifting entertainment for everyone.

Read my full review and get snippets about the films featured on UP TV in my article in The Examiner.  And look for it in Assist News Service too.

Bringing Christmas cheer to older foster kids

‘Tis the season of cheer—supposedly. But for some people, it’s a season of sadness. Instead of looking forward to a Christmas filled with family fun, food, presents… some expect nothing more than the painful reminder that they don’t have a family. And as for presents, we all know Santa is really your mom and dad. So what happens if you don't have a mum and dad?

Foster children are among those who find the holidays difficult. Thankfully, some churches and non-profit organizations are sensitive to their predicament and do their part to help bring the real Christmas message a closer.

Orphans First is an organization that mostly reaches overseas kids (the closest being in Tijuana, Mexico). But it also advocates for the underprivileged children in America and promotes a more recently founded local church group, ROCC – Reaching Orphans & Children-in-Crisis.

‘Twas a night to be remembered. And hopefully a night which will be followed up with lots more investment in these precious young people’s lives.

The Ragamuffin Bible

Nothing beats giving a new Bible at Christmas (well, except receiving one, that is). And when that Bible is laced with inspirational thoughts by Brennan Manning, then you know it’s a winner.

The NIV Ragamuffin Bible, Meditations for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Brokenhearted (published by Zondervan) is such a Bible.

The Ragamuffin Bible contains the complete NIV text—the most popular modern-English translation—and myriad candid meditations from Manning’s own reflective journey in a quest to better know the God who not only loves him but also likes him. Manning fostered the idea that God actually likes His children. His devotionals not only expound that idea, but also divulge Manning’s own soul-searching trek and share the riches of God’s grace he finds along the way.
