Snowmen, the movie

If you've been following my blog for a while, or know me personally, you know I'm a stickler for wholesome entertainment -- meaningful messages to teach our children. Well, here's a movie I recommend: Snowmen.

War Horse

As a horse lover, I can't help but rate this movie highly. I can relate to the relationship between Albert and Joey the horse. Horses are highly sensitive, intelligent creatures and when they bond, they'll never forget you.

Why Men Hate Going To Church

The largest unreached people group—at least as far as church attendance is concerned—is men. Why is that? Why do more women attend church than men? And how should this problem be addressed?

These are just some of the questions discussed in David Murrow’s Why Men Hate Going To Church.

Murrow compares the typical church set up—in terms of worship, preaching style and programs—to the way men are wired. He offers pragmatic solutions; ways to reach out and draw men into the public worship place without making them feel emasculated. He suggests ideas to change the church dynamic and create a place where men feel at home.

But more than just discussing the need to make the church more “man friendly,” Murrow draws from recent church history to show how church has evolved and become more welcoming overall, progressively making it easier for men to find their place.

Illustrations and candor make this book an enjoyable read. Why Men Hate Going To Church would especially benefit pastors, church leaders, women who want to understand men, and men who want to understand themselves.

I received a double blessing this week. First, I figured out what to buy people as a stocking stuffer. (Spoiler alert for those on my stocking list.) Next, I got to interview best selling author and fitness guru, Jimmy Peña, to talk about Prayfit 33-Day Total Body Challenge.

Hearing Jimmy's passion for Jesus and for overall health was more than inspiring. It made me want to practice what he teaches and become the best I can be. Since the only equipment needed is a DVD player, this would make a healthy group activity anywhere.)

He Knows When You Are Sleeping

He Sees You When You’re Sleepin’...by Dr. Charles W. Page

Do you recall trying to sleep on Christmas Eve while waiting for Santa to come to town? The anticipation of Saint Nicolas and all his goodies was just too much—who could sleep? The lyrics of Santa Claus is Coming to Town taunted me. “He sees you when you’re sleeping—he knows when you’re awake…” I tossed and turned trying to fall asleep, fearful I’d miss out on Santa’s visit if he caught me awake. I never doubted Santa’s ability to be aware of my wakefulness.

Unfortunately, as adults, the issues that keep us awake during the Christmas season are more complicated than those we experienced as kids. Financial burdens, strained relationships, difficult decisions, brooding regrets and fretful thoughts race through our minds and hinder our rest.

There is someone who “sees you when you’re sleeping and knows when you’re awake.” It’s not Santa Claus. The Bible reminds us, God’s eyes never close. Perhaps this truth can tuck us in for the night.

“He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” (Psalm 121:3-4)

We erroneously think that as we “turn in” that God somehow “turns off” or moves on to do more important things. But God doesn’t wait for us to wake up before He returns to work. God is just as active during our sleep—or sleeplessness. Believers can rest assured knowing God is awake guarding our lives.

What does God do as we slumber? Psalm 127:1-2 reminds us that God gives to those that He loves as they sleep. What does God give? Understanding God’s generous nature, one rendering would be that God gives to the believer whatever is needed at the time. God can give you wisdom and direction with decisions as you “sleep on it” overnight (Psalm 16:7, James 1:5). Maybe there is a financial need. The scriptures are filled with examples of how God provided for the physical needs of those He loved as they rested (I Kings 19:1-8; Exodus 16:1-8).

God’s gifts are good, perfect (James 1:17), eternal (Ephesians 1:3) and purposeful (Galatians 5:22-25). They do not require batteries, warranties and cannot be purchased in stores. But they are available 24/7/365—not limited to one night each year. God’s greatest gift did not arrive under a tree but on a tree (John 3:16). “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)

It’s plain to see, God has our back as we sleep. Try this Christmas recipe for rest.

Repent—in areas where we are aware of our transgressions. “A clean conscience  makes a soft pillow.”
Release—control of problems you’re facing and give them over to God.
Relate—connect with God through prayer and meditation while in bed.
Rest—allow God to do what you cannot do for yourself as you sleep.
Receive—God’s unmerited forgiveness, grace and blessings while you sleep.

An English proverb reminds us, “As you make your bed so you must lie in it.” The truth of God’s Word helps us face our situations. Although we cannot change the failures of our past, we can rest with a clean conscience based on God’s gift of forgiveness. Our current circumstances may appear overwhelming, but God gives His presence and His guidance in our hour of need. Our future is secure and hopeful when God’s greatest gift—His Son—is kept in view. A life supported by a vibrant, healthy relationship with the Shepherd of Sleep makes the most comfortable mattress. In childlike faith learn to trust Him as you lie down to sleep and remember: “He sees you when you’re sleeping.”

Benny's Angel

Benny's Angel is a sweet little tale for young children by Laura Allen Nonemaker. The delightful story emphasizes prayer. Colorful illustrations draw young readers in to Benny's world. (My criticism, however, would be the story depicts Benny's angel as female which contradicts the biblical picture.)

Who stole the flowers in God’s Secret Garden?

When Ella Eagle discovers that the flowers in God’s Secret Garden have wilted, she alerts Mayor Benny Bunny. The main suspect in the case is evil Count Slime, who is jealous of the joy the animals have in the garden. Mayor Benny calls in Oliver Owl, the captain of the Owl Force Wisdom Watchers, but the owls have not seen Count Slime during their patrols of the garden. Mayor Benny suggests the animals pray for an answer. God hears their prayer and sends Marietta the angel to help them solve the mystery.

This delightful tale uses animals, nature, and a visit from an angel to teach children the importance of prayer and the value of trusting God.

Why did you write Benny’s Angel?
Benny’s Angel was the result of an occurrence in my “secret garden.” While seated on my garden bench praying, I noticed a rabbit hopping through the garden. The Benny’s Angelscenario came to me. I sensed it was significant and in about ten minutes, I developed the basic storyline.

Why do you think reading is important for parents to emphasize with children, both by reading to them and fostering a healthy reading appetite as they develop their own reading skills?
I believe the time to instill a love for reading in children is when they are toddlers and beginning to experience the power of communication in their relationships. Children are ready to absorb whatever they see and hear going on around them, whether it is good or bad. It is important to read them stories that ignite their imagination and plant the seeds of sound moral principles.

What issues do you address in Benny’s Angel, and why do children need these sorts of stories to help them through life?
In the story of Benny’s Angel, the animals in God’s Secret Garden encounter a problem. They are unable to solve it themselves and pray to God for an answer. God answers their prayer by means of an angel. Benny’s Angel teaches the importance of prayer and of trusting God to answer our prayers. These principles filter naturally through the storyline and without the need for sermonizing. Children will face all kinds of problems and challenges as they grow up and stories based on sound biblical principles lay a strong foundation for their future.

A Simple Way to Help Orphans

There are countless ways to make a difference in the life of a child or help orphans generally. Here are a few:

* Pray for orphans and underprivileged children. (Join the Orphans First Prayer Chain.)
* Support a needy child or orphan ministry.
* Adopt or foster.
* Volunteer to help a foster or adoptive family. Provide respite care. * Mentor a fatherless youth or become a court appointed advocate for him/her. * Help homeless children. * Sew dresses or britches for poor children.

We can make a difference in some way -- be it big or small.

58: The Film

58: The Film -- A disturbing yet compelling film on poverty. 58: The Film portrays one of life’s most destructive forces—poverty.

Poverty destroys lives and hope. It can cause poor health, malnutrition, illiteracy, despair . . . Yet all the Christians in the USA alone have the ability to eradicate poverty by sharing their lives and their resources as stipulated in Isaiah 58—the inspiration behind the film’s title:
“If you extend your soul to the hungry
And satisfy the afflicted soul,
Then your light shall dawn in the darkness…” (Isaiah 58:11).

The film highlights families and individuals caught in poverty and forced to make drastic choices that cost their freedom. Some of them have to work day and night to provide for their families. Yet the children go to sleep hungry.

Some families find themselves caught in an endless cycle of debt and enslavement. They take out a loan to survive, then they are forced to work in illegal quarries or other precarious situations Just to pay back the interest of the loan, with no hopes of ever paying off the principal. They then pass the burden onto their families who are also enslaved.

Some of the profiles are haunting. A little boy enslaved, his face darkened, and without hope. A woman who, since being been enslaved, lives a nightmare; she knows no happiness. A mother struggles to feed her children who cry at night because they’re hungry. They sleep crammed in a dilapidated one-room shack surrounded by sewage.

Children trapped into sex slavery are also portrayed, and so is their rescuer—a man who gave up personal comfort to risk his life for the cause of justice.

The bottom line: Live Isaiah 58. Find the hard things God calls you to do and do them. Put your own problems aside and fight for someone else. It cost you something but you’ll find yourself very close to the heart of God.

58: The Film will be in theaters mid October. Don’t miss it. It will change your life -- and the lives of impoverished children.

Best French Teacher Ever -- back-to-school secrets

I once had a French teacher who greatly impacted my life, Mme. de Bechevel. I loved her. She loved me. (I think.) Anyway, she was kind and really gave me a taste for the language.

But, having said that, I've never met a teacher more motivating and more inspiring than the one I interviewed for my column in The San Diego Christian Perspectives Examiner. This one beats 'em all. And she happens to be my daughter.

Billy Graham in Quotes

Pertinent. Pure. Profound. Poignant. Powerful.

Ok, so I’m pushing the alliteration, but Billy Graham in Quotes is all of these things. This book is exactly as the title suggests: a book of quotes by Dr. Billy Graham, compiled by his son, Franklin Graham.

Billy Graham in Quotes is set up in categories so the reader can easily flip through to find Dr. Graham’s quotes on various subjects: abortion, work, the resurrection, church, evangelism, pain . . . Under the chapter titled Prayer for example, here’s a typical quote:
“Prayers have no boundaries.
They can leap miles and continents and be translated instantly into any language.”

This is a great book for just about anyone. Great for preachers as a source of spice for their sermons. And great for layman to glean from the simple truths and enrich their personal walk with Jesus.

The Eternal Messiah: Jesus of K'turia

For those who like fantasy and sci-fi, here's a book worth checking out, The Eternal Messiah: Jesus of K'turia by W.R.Pursche and Michael Gabriele. (Read the interview with Bill Pursche below the book description.)

The essence of the story?

A religious preacher brings a message of sacrifice and compassion, enticing the people to break free of their meaningless and lifeless customs. His gospel challenges both the ritualistic religious leaders and a foreign occupying power.

His name is Jesus.

But this is not ancient Palestine, but another planet. Coincidence? Or proof of the universal God?

Kalinda Prentiss is a renowned expert in her field of cultural anthropology. In her work with indigenous cultures she begins to see amazing similarities in their path to advancement -- similarities based on their acceptance of a religious Messiah. Yet when she documents her work and presents it to the scientific community, she is ridiculed for her belief that societal advancement could in any way be connected to God.

Treb Win has left his home and joined the military to escape the memories of the loss of his life mate. Bereft of purpose, he tries to lose himself in his work, his goal of achieving personal enlightenment now an impossible dream without the support of his mate and his people.

Prentiss is demoted from her prestigious position and sent to work on Win's obscure research ship. Though convinced of her theory of the link between religion and technical advancement, she vows never to trust the scientific establishment again to have an open mind toward her ideas.

Win and Prentiss become embroiled in a secretive military mission neither of them want any part of. They end up on another planet searching for a missing freighter carrying illicit government weapons which, if discovered, could start a cataclysmic war.

Here they witness something extraordinary: a religious preacher named Jesus appears. He brings a compelling message of faith and sacrifice, encouraging the people to break free from their meaningless lives. His gospel threatens both the local religious leaders and an oppressive occupying power.

Win knows little of Jesus but is curiously drawn to this preacher, kindling a spark in his long lost sense of purpose as he listens to Jesus' gospel. Prentiss believes she has the ultimate proof of her theory, but as she witnesses events unfold which are eerily similar to what happened on Earth, she must make a desperate choice between her work, her faith, and trying to stop what she fears may be the final outcome for Jesus

The science fiction elements are downplayed and serve only as a vehicle to allow the story to unfold in the future and in another place. The book will appeal to adults, Christian teenagers, and readers of religious fiction such as the "Left Behind" series. Though it is not a literal retelling of the New Testament, the inherent message -- salvation through grace, and personal actions driven by the gift of sacrifice -- is one that will be well understood and accepted by those of faith.

This is a unique story that both expands the thinking of people of faith while at the same time challenging those who are not believers or those who insist on a scientific explanation of God.

What is the bottom line of the story?

That faith will provide strength, even if one is surrounded by those who insist on a ‘scientific’ explanation of God: “Who are they who would say that the truth of faith is any less than the truth of evidence?”

And that just because you are not rich, or powerful, you can still do something to help make the world better. Each to their own ability.

What motivated you to write this book?

Ever since I was young, I was always fascinated by the question of how people would react if Jesus were to appear again. What would they do? What would they believe? What would he say?

That was the genesis of the idea. To keep the story more focused on the spiritual message, the story is set not only in the future, but on another planet. This also allowed the story to address another key question: How will God appear in the universe?

Battered babies need loving homes

It is a sad day when there are no homes, no provisions, for battered babies and abused toddlers.

I Called Him Dancer

As an avid lover of dance, an advocate for orphans and a friend of the homeless, I eagerly read I Called Him Dancer by G. Edward Snipes because all these components are found in the central figure, Michael.

For a moment, Michael danced on top of the world, but one bad choice turned his life upside down. The once promising Broadway star now washes windshields for tips and lives among the homeless. When his former dance partner recognizes him behind the fray of whiskers, shame drives him away from her. Angry at God and the world, the Dancer refuses to allow anyone into his life. When everything is stripped away, three things remain: faith, hope, and love. The greatest of these is love.

 I Called Him Dancer is a story about how one woman's enduring faith and unconditional love drives her to reach out to a homeless man who has given up on life.

Interview With The Author

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

When I was a child, I got my first book. I flipped through the pages, then tore it apart. I didn't know it at the time, but that's exactly what you do when editing a manuscript.

I hated writing when I was younger. I only did what I had to do, and sometimes not even that. Writers block was more like writers dementia. My mind didn't return to me until after ... hmm. What were we talking about?

In 1998, I became active in prison ministry. Many of the men I ministered to were eager to learn. Someone asked me if I had my studies or notes on paper. I agreed to write out the next study and then my writing career was born. The problem wasn't that I couldn't write. It was that I didn't have something to say. Or didn't realize I had something to say. Over time writing transformed from a task to a passion.

Who is your favorite character in I Called Him Dancer?

The character that inspired me the most is Kenyon. Many readers have stated the same. He’s human, struggling to do what is right, and lives by a genuine faith. At times he wrestles between what he knows God wants him to do, and what he wants. Kenyon is down to earth, not preachy, yet his life has an impact on others.

In the story I tried to present Christianity in an honest light. Many who claim to be Christians show hypocrisy and drive others (like the Dancer) away from the faith. This is a real problem in the Christian culture. Kenyon shows what sincere faith looks like. He’s far from perfect, but his simple faith impacts those around him. Kenyon’s sincerity is something the Dancer can’t understand and it piques his curiosity.

What would you like your readers to take away from this novel?

I want people to look at the reality of how faith impacts the world around us. Hypocrisy is being pretentious about faith, and there is a difference between failure and hypocritical behavior. Christians shouldn’t feel dejected when they fail. It’s part of this life of reaching upward.

Also, we all know someone who appears hopeless and hostile toward God, but we don’t know what the Lord is doing behind the scenes. Ultimately, hope is what everyone should take away. Hope that readers are not alone in their struggles. Hope that our lives can make an impact – even with our imperfections. Finally, hope that the people we care about are never out of God’s reach.

No doubt about it, Knock ‘em Dead lives up to its title. The book provides all the ammunition you need to wow potential bosses or future companies that might hire you.

The job marketplace is scary and competitive—especially during this economic rut. Over-qualified people queue up for menial jobs below their educational level—and they’re still not hired. So, how does one stand out as being the very best potential employee? Knock ‘em Dead tells us how.

The book covers every angle of job hunt prep one can imagine – everything from resumé writing, dress-code, interview techniques, personal branding, first impressions, how to find jobs, how to land interviews, how to query, how to impress, legal issues . . . Phew! Exhaustingly exhaustive!

There are some areas I might modify (in practice at least)– areas which hint at avoiding full disclosure to land the gig. But aside from that discrepancy, the book is a great tool for job-hunters, career changers or for people wanting to improve their overall people skills and professionalism.

Father's Day and the Fatherless

A famous card company provided free Mother’s Day cards to US prison inmates so they could send a card to their mothers. Almost every prisoner lined up eagerly to receive the treasure card to send to mom. The event was so successful, the company decided to do the same thing for Father’s Day. But the results were quite different. No one wanted a card. No one.

Lesson: Either the inmates didn’t have a father, or their father was not someone they cared about.

We see a powerful message here: Fathers play a crucial role in children’s lives. Fathers—or lack thereof—impact their children’s choices. A child who has no father, or whose father is absent, insensitive or even cruel, will likely make poor choices and turn to delinquency.

No wonder the Bible tells fathers not to “irritate, provoke” or “exasperate to resentment” their children (Ephesians 6:4, Amplified Version). No such commandment is given to mothers. Apparently, only dads need this exhortation because they seem to possess a natural propensity to irk their children.

Fathers irk their children by being absent, ignoring them, having unrealistically high expectations for them, not listening to them, being harsh . . . But nothing irks more than just not being there for them, not caring. That one leaves irreplaceable soul-scars and can deposit bitterness in the heart.

America harbors its share of frustrated, hurting, lonely children and youths—kids who either don’t care about Father’s Day or who wish it didn’t exist at all because of its oxymoronic reminder of their ‘fatherlessness’. They either don’t have a dad or their dad simply isn’t worth celebrating. This is the case of many foster children in America—of which there are half a million in America. (San Diego alone boasts 6, 500 youths in the foster system.)

Many of these kids (who are essentially orphans) will age out at age 18 with no real guidance, no healthy family connections, and no direction. They’ll end up on the street or in prison like their predecessors.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

There are enough churches to provide homes, mentorship, older brother programs, family inclusion programs etc. for every single stray youth and foster child in America. It just takes a willing heart (and connecting with the local foster agencies or other youth organizations to see how to help).

While Americans celebrate Father’s Day, may God tug on the heart of His children, reminding them of the plight the fatherless. May all who know the Father show those who are fatherless that they too can know the greatest Father of all – the heavenly Father whose love surpasses all.

Voluteering & loving our neighbors

"Do not be overwhelmed by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21).

Evil is rampart everywhere and the world seems to be getting darker and darker. Cataclysmic events and tragedies seem to be striking out from every angle. It can be overwhelming. So what do we do?

When we see the world falling apart and feel helpless, there is always still something -- even one small thing -- we can do. We can all volunteer in some capacity of other. We all have the opportunity to make a difference, to sow seeds of good, to overcome evil with good.

There are so many ways we can volunteer. Homeless shelters always need help. Elderly people often need a hand to keep their homes in order, or just to hear someone read to them, and local communities in general depend on volunteerism to function at their best.

All kinds of people volunteer, even atheists. But to the Christian, it's not an option. It's a commandment. Jesus commands us to be salt and light, to make a difference so-to-speak, and to reach out to others in need everywhere. He tells us to love others as we do ourselves. He tells us to show love by our actions. And you don't have to go to Haiti or India to do that. You can begin right in your local area, your neighborhood.

The Brotherhood – A Precinct 11 Novel, by bestselling author, Jerry B. Jenkins is a page-turner with believable characters and a faith-building message. It reads like watching a movie (hint! hint! filmmakers).

The Brotherhood holds all the components of great fiction: tragedy, suspense, crime, gore, drama, and romance – entertainment at its best. If that were all, it’d be worth the read, but it gets better. The story also provides spiritual fodder.

The narrative surrounds Chicago cop Boone Drake and the immense tragedy of the worst kind of personal loss that tests the very core of all he is—especially his faith.

Although a regular church attendee, Drake had two main passions: his close family and his career. When his first passion was destroyed—literally—he tried to thrust himself into the second with hopes of becoming a Chicago gangbuster. But was he ready? Would his absence of solid faith affect his decisions and jeopardize any hope of promotion?

Drake soon learned that God’s plans included a lot more than a promotion; they included a change of heart.

Great novel for all who like pure entertainment.

Haiti's Potholes - and how I fell in one

Some people have good eyes and see nothing; they are blind. Others are blind but see more than most of us ever seem to see. Such was the man in this picture. Almost a modern day prophet you might say... More here.

Friends have asked for gory details about how I fell in a well during my last trip to Haiti in March. (Prior to that in January, I got my foot stuck in wet cement. So maybe there's a message here...or I'm just plain clumsy.) Well, maybe I'll give you the gore. Maybe not. You won't know for sure unless you read my recent article about Haiti's Potholes in Assist News Services.

You'll find much more than the now-overmilked story about my dramatic descent into the lower parts; you'll find out what God is doing and satanic strongholds are cramming the style of those seeking to do honest good in Haiti. But it's all good in the end. So be sure to read about it.

I've included some pix in this story as well as in the latest downloadable Orphans First update.

Deep Wounds, Deep Healing

In his book, Deep Wounds, Deep Healing, Dr. Charles H. Kraft addresses the profound struggles that have lurked deep in the psyche since early childhood causing the “inner child” to be dissociated from the adult and allowing the build-up of garbage which provides fodder for demon activity.

Demons attach themselves to junk—like rats in garbage. It’s essential to deal with the junk to weaken the demonic influence.
Christians can be troubled by demonic influence as much as anyone, but Kraft goes further and Christians can still be possessed—although his support for this theory could be shot down by a grasp of semantics. However you look at it, believers can be set free by the Holy Spirit but, seemingly, some people need the help of a counselor or professional who understands spiritual warfare to find freedom.

Kraft’s deep healing technique focuses on biblical principles and seeks to reconnect a person to their inner child to discover the cause of the wounds and to help them see Jesus was there all the time.

The book is not light reading, but enlightening. A great tool for those interested in understanding deep healing.

Why I fell down a well in Haiti

My trip to Haiti this month was filled with delights and drama.

This picture shows just one of those delights--a little girl who is the joyful recipient of one of the dresses donated to Orphans First by Dress-A-Girl-Around-The-World. We gave out many of these beautiful dresses and also britches for boys.

Our trip took us to several parts of Haiti. I'll be writing a more in-depth article on this soon so keep stopping by. For now, let's talk about a wee spat of drama: I fell in a 20 foot well.

No panic, I didn't fall right to the bottom (or I probably wouldn't even be here to tell the story); I fell in up to my chest where I caught onto the metal lid which had flipped sideways. With the help of a friend, I managed to get my dangling body out and size up my wounds -- a bunch of bruises and a few broken ribs.

The good thing about that fall is that it brought attention to the need to get the well lid hinges fixed so that a child doesn't fall in. It also gave me a good reason to accept all the pampering and pity being poured on me (hey, I'm milking this for all it's worth -- it's not everyday I get to fall in a well). So, it's all good.

And whatever way you look at it, what are a few broken ribs and bruises in light of all that's happening in the world whether in Japan, Libya or even in Haiti? The world is in a bad way. With that sobering thought, I invite you to read my latest article in the San Diego Christian Perspectives Examiner on Spring 2011 and signs of the times.

PrayFit - interview with Jimmy Pena

I recently posted my review of PrayFit. If that whet your appetite to get fitter and closer to Jesus, you won't wanna miss my interview with the godly, fitness guru and author of PrayFit, Jimmy Pena.

JD--I love that PrayFit challenges me to go further in my workout than I'd normally choose--while also inspiring me to go deeper with God. What gave you the idea for this unique combination?
JP— Well, from a fitness standpoint, I teach people that the body will only change according to the level at which it is stressed. Our bodies are pretty resilient and they adapt so well to what we put them through. For that reason, we have to continually ask more of ourselves day in and day out. I think the same thing goes for our faith. Spending good time with the Lord each day, seeking His guidance, going deeper into His word…that’s how we stay healthy on the inside.

JD--As well as being a brilliant fitness coach, PrayFit shows that you walk close to the Lord How does your faith impact your desire to help others get in shape?
JP— Well, all I know is that I love the Lord, and I am so thankful He’s in my heart. I’ve said before that it doesn’t necessarily take faith to be healthy, but if we have faith, we should strive to be. The message of PrayFit has been formed and molded into some simple concepts, most important being that we believe that while life is not about the body, our health is a means of praise. That we’re called to take care of the body that carries the soul and that there are plenty of biblical references and examples that point to and require a response in the area of physical fitness and proper eating. We believe that many areas of life require a sacrifice. Is our money required for heaven? No. But we’re told to be good stewards of it. Same thing goes for our bodies. Required for heaven? Nah. But we’re called to take care of them because they’re not ours to neglect. After all, that’s what a steward is anyway; someone put in charge of something that’s not their own. It’s not about a six-pack, but something so fearfully and wonderfully made deserves better attention and upkeep. Things like lower blood pressure and sensible weight loss can be seen simply as bi-products of obedience.

JD--One of the things I love about PrayFit is it's gimmick-free. The exercises don't even require equipment. I'm often in Haiti or other third-world countries where there's little opportunity to exercise. Do you have any special tips for me in this situation so I don't get back home stiff and out of shape?
JP—So glad you asked. We wrote PrayFit with bodyweight as the resistance because anybody and every body can experience a solid workout in very little time, without costly equipment and in the privacy of their home or hotel room. Few people realize how effective a bodyweight workout can be, but if you’re at home and you have only 10 minutes before work or if you’re in a hotel room, the simple bodyweight approach is so effective. The best thing? It’s all relative. My best effort, your best effort, anyone reading this article…we all have a threshold. Someone who can only do 5 push-ups or bodyweight squats or someone capable of 500, it doesn’t matter. Your best is your best, is your best… And each individual will see results. So while you’re in Haiti doing God’s work, you can Stayfit with PrayFit.

With all the talk about the dangers of obesity, are Americans finally catching on? Are they becoming more health conscious or are they still caught in the deadly cycle of unhealthy food and little exercise?
JP—We’re great at identifying the dangers, risks and haunting statistics, but obesity is still something we see yet don’t yet feel. For that reason, it’s our opinion that the believer needs to lead the way. Whether you’re Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Non-denominational or otherwise, we believe that the believer should be the example. In 5, 10, 50 years, when this country puts statistics together to summarize the state of health in our nation, may there be one group that led the way to a healthier America…the Christians.

I reviewed PrayFit out of curiosity. How is it celebrities recommend a fitness book that focuses on Jesus? (Not your usual Hollywood stuff, for sure.) I soon found out what makes PrayFit buzz-worthy.

PrayFit is a guide to a healthy body and stronger faith in 28 days and includes devotions, exercises, tips and meal plans.

Author and fitness guru, Jimmy Pena, shares his wisdom about exercise, food and faith. Jimmy Page, MS and Jim Stoppani, PHD, complete the package making PrayFit an easy-read manual on growing in faith and fitness in 28 days.

Don’t get me wrong. Although PrayFit provides a challenging 28-day workout plan (which, by the way, involves zero equipment, so no excuses anyone), the spiritual component is not deep theology. The devotional nuggets and prayers are simple, but nonetheless biblical. And, like the meal-plans and food tips, readings are bite-sized easy to read.

PrayFit provides intense workouts, thorough food info and inspiring spiritual content. I recommend it for just about anyone. (Makes a great gift—especially for friends interested in improving their health and needing to draw closer to Jesus.)

Defining Faith Part 2

It took a whole lot of faith to sit under that collapsed building on top of a ton of stinky rubble. Eeeeeooh! Who knows what lay underneath that stuff? But what is real faith -- the kind that delivers our souls from damnation? And what makes the Christian faith, belief in the Bible as God's inspired Word, different from other faiths?

One defining aspect of the Christian faith is faith. Sound simple? It is. But some people make it so darned complicated.

The Bible teaches that by faith we are saved, not by works (Ephesians 2:8). Faith, as discussed in last week’s article, must be based on truth in order to be true faith. To the Bible-believer, that object of truth is God’s Son, Jesus.

Most religions – just about all religions – believe that you must try to be good enough to merit Eternal Life and Heaven. That’s what makes Christianity or Bible-believing different from other religions; the very premise of Christianity is that humans cannot do enough good to merit God. They cannot arrive at perfection because they are bound by old sin natures.

The Bible says none of us will ever be good enough for all have sinned and fall far from the mark of perfection demanded by the very personification of perfection, God (Romans 3:23). That’s why God sent His only Son, Jesus, to pay the price of our imperfections and to die for our sin, so we could, in essence, go scot free to Heaven on the merit of what He did—and not on what we did or didn’t do. That’s called grace: receiving something we don’t deserve and never earned or merited.

Bottom line: He did it for us. We must accept it and accept Him, believe in Him, put our faith in Him. It’s not hard but it is clearly the most important decision one can ever make because it’s this decision that determines our eternal destiny. If we believe in Him, we become His adopted child and He promises Heaven and a life walking with Him now. Just takes a little faith...

But that doesn’t mean that once we have put our trust in Jesus and accept Him that we can live like Hell with no consequences. Whatever a person sows, he or she will also reap (Galatians 6:9). And a person who has asked Christ into his heart will be changed over time. Truly changed. And that will show on the outside.

The Bible says that faith without works is dead.

“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2:14-18, NKJV).

So here’s the cincher. If you really know Jesus you’ll walk the walk that reflects who He is. You’ll reach out to the hurting, pour out to the poor, reach out to a needy neighbor, pray for loved ones, seek to make your own wrongdoing right, sense when you’ve done something that grieves God and ask for forgiveness… The list goes on. Unto The Hills: A Daily Devotional by Billy Graham

Let’s face it; you can’t really miss the mark when reading a book by Billy Graham. And Unto the Hills; A Daily Devotional is no exception. It’s a fabulous tool for all Jesus followers.

Each daily devotional provides a Scripture followed by a commentary relevant to the Bible quote, then ends with a prayer. In true character to Dr. Graham’s down-to-earth style, this book makes for easy (but interesting) reading. Its pages echo a tone of characteristic purity – characteristic of Billy Graham and, of course, of Jesus.

Recurring themes pop up periodically such as angels, salvation, faith, family, suffering etc. Some of the devotionals delve into several Bible passages to provide an overall sense of what God is saying. Others provide fascinating illustrations through parables or real-life stories. Poignant quotes from other men of God – some well known, others lesser known – also sporadically lace the pages throughout, enriching the read.

Unto The Hills would benefit anyone—including unbelievers (it makes a great evangelistic tool) and even pastors. But it’s especially a must-have for new believers.

A Year With God by R.P.Nettelhorst is a daily reading devotional book providing an overview of God at work in the Old Testament.

Compiled into sections highlighting facets of God’s character (such as love, forgiveness, mercy, faith…), each reading begins with a passage from the Old Testament followed by a brief, devotional commentary. Sometimes the commentary expounds the Scripture cited for that day’s reading; other times the author points to other relevant passages that add clarity.

This book is a great tool for those who’d like to grow in their understanding of the Old Testament. I wouldn’t, however, recommend it for new converts and babes in Christ because it’s hard reading.

My criticism of the book would be in the following areas:
* The use of different Bible translations is distracting.
* There are a number of serious editing mistakes including mixing up Bible characters.
* There’s no bio. (Many readers want to know what makes the author an expert on their subject before they’ll believe a book’s content.)

Overall, though, this book is a great daily read to help you know God more deeply via the Old Testament.

thankfulness and giving.

There is no question in my wee mind that I could (and must) give more. I don't need to be rich to give. (Phew!!! I'm really off the mark on that one.) I just need to do it--to give.

The God Hater

The God Hater by Bill Myers is one of the most pertinent, relevant and exciting novels you can read. Here's what the book's about:

A cranky, atheist philosophy professor loves to shred incoming freshmen of their faith. He is chosen by a group of scientists to create a philosophy for a computer-generated world exactly like ours.

Much to his frustration every model introduced from Darwinism, to Existentialism, to Eastern beliefs fails. The only way to preserve the computer world is to introduce laws from outside their system through a Law Giver. Of course this goes against everything he believes and he hates it. But even this doesn't completely work because the citizens of that world become legalists and completely miss the spirit behind the Law.

The only way to save them is to create a computer character like himself to personally explain it. He does. So now there are two of him—the one in our world and the one in the computer world. (Sound familiar?)

Unfortunately, a rival has introduced a virus into the computer world. Things grow worse until the professor in that computer world sees the only way to save his world is to personally absorb the virus and the penalty for breaking the Law. Of course it's clear to all, including our real world professor, that this act of selfless love has become a complete reenactment of the Gospel. It is the only possible choice to save the computer world and, as he finally understands, our own.

Halloween or Harvest?

The most scary thing about Halloween is to see how Americans celebrate it. Just another excuse to spend disproportionate amounts of dollars -- and do a lot of useless things. But that's only on the surface level.

Truth is there are many horrible things that happen on Halloween. It is, after all, the celebration of the dead, a time to evoke demons, sacrifice life and honor the dark arts as this video clip, Halloween: Innocent Fun or Spiritual Perception, portrays.

The Least Among You

The Least Among You is based on the true story of Richard Kelly, a black man who becomes the victim of racial injustice and religious hypocrisy.

After graduating from college, Kelly (Cedric Sanders) makes a successful career in the corporate world where he is accused of participating in the 1965 Watts riots and arrested. A plea bargain is made for Kelly’s release—one that will change his life drastically, and change the lives of other blacks thereafter. He agrees to study in an all-white seminary for two semesters.

As the first and only black student encouraged by the president to rise above the racial barrier, Kelly becomes the center of distasteful provocation. Surrounded by hypocrisy, corruption, indifference and disillusionment, his leadership qualities—and his faith—are tested almost to breaking point.

Questions/Answers from Francine Rivers

Mother-daughter relationships are often complicated and fraught with emotional land mines. What was your approach to exploring the complexity of those relationships in a fictional setting?
Questions, lots of questions! Every time I told someone I was working on a book about mother-daughter relationships, people wanted to share their family stories. As I wrote Her Mother’s Hope, I wanted readers to see through each woman’s eyes, and understand how the past shaped each in the way she responded to her mother. Hildemara doesn’t believe her mother loves her, but it is out of Marta’s pain and loss that tough-love techniques were forged. Marta wants to strengthen her daughter for whatever lies ahead. Sometimes what we view as rejection can actually be an act of sacrificial love. We seldom know the experiences that shaped our mothers, the deep hurts, traumatic events, broken relationships. I hope women who read this book will want to share those things with one another.

After readers finish this series what do you want them to remember? What questions and feelings do you want it to provoke on a spiritual and emotional level?
I hope and pray readers who have had difficult relationships with their mothers or daughters will let go of the pain and anger and allow God to work in their lives. God can work all things together for good for those who trust and love Him. Following Jesus’ example changes the way we see people. It changes the way we relate to one another. Even when the chasm is too deep to cross, we can decide to forgive. Some people wear grievances like a dirty coat. With God’s strength, we can strip it off and be free. About the Author

One of the greatest needs in Haiti since the earthquake is for children to attend school. Before the quake, over half of Haiti's children didn't go to school. Now those numbers have increased, complicating Haiti's future.

Monster Inside My Daughter

I'm a huge advocate for adoption. And for stories. So today I'm featuring a special true story about a beautiful, adopted child right here on my blog. May it inspire you as it did me.

“I feel a pulse,” one of the medics said.

The paramedics worked feverishly on Manisha to make sure she was still alive. My beautiful seven-year-old daughter from Nepal lay on the floor unconscious at the O’Connell Center of the University of Florida.

“Has she ever had a seizure?” another one asked.

“No, no,” I said in bewilderment. Manisha rolled over and vomited.

One emotion consumed me: Fear. The enormity of single parenting hit me like lightening.

I cried out, “Where are you, God? I feel so alone.”

After hooking up stabilizing IVs, Manisha was whisked off in an ambulance to Shands Teaching Hospital. I found a pay phone and called my mother. Her first comment was, “Do you know what day this is?”

I remembered—September 19. Four years to the day and almost to the hour, my father had died of a brain tumor. It was about 5:00 p.m. My shattered world continued to close in on me. A short time later my worst fears were confirmed.

“There is something on the CAT scan. We have a called a neurologist,” I heard the nurse say.

“No, no, no,” every cell in my body cried out. “God, you can’t let this happen. Not again!”

But God was silent. The next nine days of hospitalization were filled with tests—MRI, gallium scan, spinal tap, TB test, HIV test, numerous blood draws, and too many questions and not enough answers by doctors doing their daily rounds with medical students in tow. Manisha had what in medical parlance is called a “zebra.”

As the days passed in the hospital, I asked God for two things that humanly speaking seemed impossible. I prayed first that the doctors would not have to do surgery. I couldn’t bear the thought of seeing Manisha’s beautiful thick, curly black hair shaved off. The ugly scars of surgery still lingered in my mind from my dad’s brain surgery. And I prayed that whatever was in Manisha’s head would not be cancerous. I had asked God to heal my father of a brain tumor and he died. Could I trust God for Manisha’s healing?

It was critical that the doctor’s make the correct diagnosis. The wrong treatment could kill her. Did she have a malignant brain tumor or a worm inside her head? Manisha had been adopted by me from Nepal at the age of three—old enough to be exposed to the extreme poverty of Nepal and lack of clean drinking water. 57.1 percent of the water in Nepal is considered unsatisfactory for human consumption, contaminated with feces.

Manisha’s condition turned out to be caused by a tapeworm infection of the brain—the most common parasitic infection of the nervous system. The larvae can travel anywhere in the body—the muscles, brain, eye, and other structures. The condition, known as neurocysticercosis, is still relatively rare in this country, but is appearing more on the radar as part of the differential diagnosis for seizures.

Thankfully, twelve years later, Manisha is a healthy, well-adjusted 19-year-old finishing her A.A. degree at Santa Fe College—six months ahead of schedule.

Why did God allow this nightmare to happen? I don’t know why God allows the hard things in our lives, but I do know God never wastes anything. I hope writing about neurocysticercosis today will bring awareness to this very preventable disease. International adoptive parents and travelers to the developing world should seek appropriate medical care upon returning to the U.S. if they have been exposed to poor sanitary conditions or contaminated water.

In spite of the trials of single parenting, the years following that dreadful day of September 19, 1994, have been filled with life and joy. Manisha soon will be leaving home to make her own way in the world and I reflect on her middle name Hope—with God, there is always hope, and for that I am thankful.

Local Mosques & Ground Zero Controversy

Incredible! That’s what people are saying about what is happening in America today whether in New York or our own backyard here in San Diego.

While churches struggle to meet their budgets (both North Coast Church in Vista and North Coast Calvary Chapel in Carlsbad have built new edifices recently to accommodate their growing membership—a challenge in a declining economy), expensive mosques are popping up everywhere.

Recently, just in time for Ramadan, a new Islamic Center opened in Santaluz, North County—a building costing some 5.5 million dollars. Many San Diegans opposed this construction but eventually accepted their fate gracefully in the name of tolerance

Temecula now faces a similar problem. But so far the people have not relinquished their right to show their disapproval of building a Muslim edifice in this peaceful old town with a distinctly Christian penchant.

Of course, greater hoo-ha surrounds the controversy of building a mosque near Ground Zero, the sacred ground where 3, 000 people met their death caused by planes flown by Muslim terrorists into the Trade Center Towers on 9/11. While New Yorkers express divided opinions on this sensitive issue, most vehemently oppose it, considering it to be a slap in the face or even provocation—almost like erecting a statue of Hitler in the middle of Jerusalem.

But the biggest outrage centers around President Obama’s nonchalance over this matter. He not only doesn’t see any problem in building a Mosque near Ground Zero, he actually backs it up. (Is this one of the reasons why Rima Fakih—the first Arab Muslim to be elected Miss USA—shows such fondness for Mr. Obama?)

Why is the building of a Mosque so problematic (other than the obvious issue of blatent insensitivity when it comes to Ground Zero)?

It is a problem because a Mosque is considered a landmark stating, “This territory is ours.” And while believing in freedom of religion, many Americans don’t want to follow Europe’s downfall and lose their national identity which was founded on Christian principles. (Europe lost its identity one mosque at a time. England and France are now highly populated with Muslims—quite different from the old Europe Spurgeon knew—and most churches are empty.)

But the convoluted controversy doesn’t end here. Another disturbing element has escaped the notice of many people’s attention: Islamic supremacist Ground Zero Mosque imam is traveling to Arab countries on behalf of the USA president and his trip is being funded by American tax dollars. Is it any wonder that Jesus tells His people to watch and pray, to be vigilant and mindful of the lateness of the hour and to overcome evil by doing good. Praying for America is a good place to begin. Let God hear the voice of His people. Then let the people hear the voice of God as His people speak up boldly for what is right.

2 Amazing Events in Oceanside this Weekend

Oceanside is where it’s at this weekend. At least for those looking for fun, food, music and purpose—an opportunity to give a cup of cold water to those in need.

Two fun-focused, Christ-centered events will take place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons: one at the Oceanside Ampitheater, the other at Cafecito on The Strand.

Since I've written abundant details of these fantabulous events in my article in The San Diego Examiner, I'll send you over there to get the whole scoop.

Resurrection in May

The unusual thing about Resurrection in May by Lisa Samson is that it brings you into what feels like a time warp, even though it isn’t. The story takes place in this century.

What gives this impression is that for most of the book, May Seymour, the centerpiece of the story, lives on a farm without a telephone, without a computer, without a car . . . She milks cows, gathers eggs and cooks up ol’ fashioned wholesome food so you feel as if you’re in Little-House-On-The-Prairie times.

This all comes about because May—a spoilt young girl from a middle-class family—a girl who spent her college years partying and waywarding in every way—spends a season soul-searching in Rwanda during the war where she finds herself caught in the genocide, witnessing horror at its greatest. The farm, then, becomes her place of refuge, of reclusion—and where her faith is rekindled.

May finds her deliverance in God’s fatherly patience mirrored in the loving people He brings into her life—including an old friend who awaits his fate on death row. These people, along with the flowers and animals, bring May’s healing.

This book is a good read, intriguing and warm. However, as with many of the books I read recently, I found numerous spelling mistakes, typos and incomprehensible sentences. Need better copywriters if you ask me. ☺

Weather, circumstances & happiness

The world is marked by tragedy. But circumstances should not mold our happiness.

Many people are overwhelmed by what is happening in the world whether earthquakes, famines or the Gulf Oil Spill. The typical attitude is one of the following:

*apathetic optimism – “Oh, don’t worry, it’ll all work out just fine in the end. This is just history and nature doing its thing.”

*alarm and panic – “We’re doomed. There is no hope.”

End Times and Homelessness

One of the biggest shockers I got when I first came to rich America (especially Southern California) was to see so many homeless people -- even children. Shocking!

On another note, some sixty Orphans First friends (many from our House Church in San Clemente) attended TBN to view live TV -- a special End Times edition with Chuck Smith, Tim LaHaye and Josh McDowell. Stand Down for Homeless Veterans

A few things are very dear to my heart. Of course, children and orphans (anyone who knows me knows that much). But also our military who serve us by keeping us safe. (A huge hug and thank you to our military.) And then there's homeless people; My heart breaks for homeless people -- half of whom are byproducts of a broken society and came straight from the foster system where they never connected to a loving family. But a third of those homeless folks are veterans.

Now, as Mike Turko (a local San Diego reporter) would say: "That ain't right!" And he's right. It ain't right.

That's why I love what's taking place this weekend in San Diego: a three-day event reaching out to about 1,000 veterans u this area -- most of whom are homeless.

Quakes and Tragedy Shakes San Diego

Lately it seems that things just aren't normal around here. For one thing, it's been awfully cold. (Well, cold by San Diego standards which, admittedly, defy the rest of the world in terms of perfect temperatures.) For another, it's been relatively quiet (or maybe that's because it's cold and people are not partying as much!).

But some San Diegans, it has been anything but quiet lately.

America's Fleeing Freedom -- July 4th

Independence is celebrated in so many different ways around the world. This photo is of our children in Grace Home, India celebrating Indian Independence Day and having a lot of fun. More details here.

The interesting thing about July 4th (Independence Day) is that it's an opportunity to celebrate our freedom as a nation. The irony is that we're fast losing that freedom.

From a European perspective (I'm a Brit), it saddens me to watch America sell her soul out. In the past few years, I've watched this beautiful nation, land of the free, slide down one long slippery slope towards giving up her freedom. Just watch the news. Compromise upon compromise is gripping us at the throat and will lead to our downfall.

America is now promoting illegal activities (I'm not gonna go there, but if it's illegal, we shouldn't reward it). She is weakening the family structure (gay parenthood honored in schools, Obama honors gays on father's day -- hello!), accommodating Muslims while belittling Christians and rebuffing Israel. We are closing our eyes to things that are just darned wrong so we can enjoy ignorant bliss rather than asking questions. Disturbing questions.

There's also the oil spill. Huge oil spill that's done more damage than anyone dares tell us. Hardly a day of freedom for all the wildlife being killed.

Father's Day and the fatherless

Father's Day is not always so jolly for some dads -- and some kids.

For many children it's a painful, painful time -- a reminder that they don't have a dad who cares. And for some dads, it's a reminder that they're far away from their children -- perhaps serving overseas to protect our country, or perhaps caught in an ugly divorce situation. Whatever the reason, Father's Day can be tough.

Searching for God Knows What

From Adam to Eve to potential visiting aliens, in Searching for God Knows What, Don Miller explores the human dilemma in his typical humorous, thought-probing style. Humans are both complex and simple, entangled in a web of fallen selfhood. Our biggest search – or felt-need – is for significance.

We spend our lives striving for identity and acceptance, subconsciously yielding to, as Miller puts it, a “jury of peers,” seeking their endorsement. Like people in a lifeboat, we strive for survival in a hierarchy based on humanly perceived worth. We hope to make it but we always fall short. No amount of human approval fulfills us and replaces what we lost in the Garden—our relationship with God.

Miller explains our hopelessly hollow hearts and desire for significance in his 5-point Genesis Theory. We are broken. Only Jesus can fix us. And He does this through relationship.

This book answers a lot of questions and could really help people in marriage, or any other kind of relationship. My only criticism: I had to read some sentences twice because of an absence of punctuation which, while expressing Miller’s unique voice, obscures the meaning. Still, this book’s a great read for both seekers and mature Christians alike.

Voter's Guide

I just voted. And you? In case you're still wondering about voting, read my article below. Or read the original article I published in The Examiner.

“A people that value privilege above principle will soon lose both.” --Dwight Eisenhower

“Our future as a country depends on an involved and concerned citizenry.” --George Washington

“Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.” –Ronald Reagan

“Ballots are the rightful and peaceful successors to bullets. Please vote!” --Abraham Lincoln

Ok, so now it’s June, what happens in San Diego (other than June Gloom that is)? Well, for one thing, today is the ‘big day.’ Yep, it’s time to vote.

While politics and religion don’t mix – or so they say – it is the duty of every Christian to vote. The Bible teaches that Christians are to be light and salt:

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men” (Matthew 5:13).

“Trampled by men” is a harsh term. Certainly, men will trample all over us, all over society, if we don’t exercise our influence. This includes our privilege to vote.

Christians are given not just the opportunity but also the responsibility to influence society in a beneficial way by choosing to act according to our eternal purpose – to act Christ-like.

But what has acting Christ-like got to do with voting Prop “XYZ” or voting for various candidates to hold key positions to improve the quality of life in our country and also our county?

Would Jesus have voted? If He did (and we can’t know), His choices would have been based on biblical principles. The question then is: Is this Prop or this candidate aligned with the principles seen in the Bible? As Christians, we share this same responsibility: to choose in a way that pleases God.

Today’s the day . . . to make our votes count!

Memorial Day Weekend, and the weirding of America

As America celebrates Memorial Day Weekend -- with the scent and buzz of barbecue in the air -- we have much to be concerned about. Local elections are on the horizon and we'd better choose carefully -- and prayerfully. We need to consider what took place in the last national election, and what has happened since. Many people find themselves saying, "I don't believe this is happening!" But it is.

What?

Well, that would take pages and pages to write about, and I'm smart enough to leave that with those who have eloquent expertise such as the American Family Association. But let's just say it gets weirder and weirder. If you don't believe me, check out American politics on snopes.com and see what's true and what isn't.

For example, it is true that they're building a Mosque right next to where the NY Trade Towers were -- where the 911 tragedy took place. Hard to believe isn't it? But it's true.

Still, I said I would write about it here so I won't. (Otherwise I'd also have to write about the increasing earthquakes, volcano eruptions, oil spill etc. to put it all in context.) We need to be vigilant and wise, think hard and pray. What is happening in this country is NOT normal. But, given what the Bible predicts will happen before Jesus' second coming, I guess it's to be expected. So, in that respect -- and only in that respect -- woo hoo!!!!!

Now, back to Memorial Day Weekend, this is a good time to pray for our military -- those that seek to protect our country's freedom -- and to pray for their families. Read my latest article on this subject in The Examiner.

Her Mother's Hope by Francine Rivers

I’ll soon post pics and details of my recent trip to Haiti. Meanwhile, I’m delighted to present an interview with Francine Rivers– one of my favorite authors. Read about her latest book, Her Mother’s Hope, and enjoy as she gives us glimpses into her life.

Can you tell us something about your Christian testimony?
I was reared in a Christian home. My parents were active in church, my father an elder, my mother a deaconess. I attended Christian summer camps, youth group and said grace at every meal. I thought being born into a Christian family and raised in the faith made me a Christian. It didn’t. Each person makes their own choice, and it took me years to surrender to Jesus – not until after I’d gone through college, married, had children and started a writing career. Rick and I went to church, but came away dissatisfied and knowing there must be something more. We both had personal issues that brought us close to divorce several times. We wanted our own way and to have control over our own lives. Having control is an illusion. As a child, I’d asked Jesus to be my Savior. What I didn’t understand is I needed to surrender my life to Him and allow Him to be LORD of my life as well.

Our marriage was on the verge of collapse when Rick started his own business. We moved to northern California to be closer to family. We made many outer changes, but no change of the heart. As we moved into our rental house, a little boy came over to help and said, “Have I got a church for you!” We weren’t ready to listen. The lady on the other side of our fence also invited us to the same church. Out of desperation, I went a few weeks later. It was my first experience with “expository teaching.” The pastor taught straight out of the Bible, explaining the historical context, what the scriptures were saying, and what they had to do with me in the present. I drank it in! I took my three children to church. They loved it. Rick resisted (after having a somewhat disheartening experience with a denominational church in Southern California). I asked the pastor if he would be willing to teach a home Bible study. He agreed -- if Rick agreed, which he did. Studying the Bible changed our lives. Our hearts and minds opened to Christ. We both accepted Jesus as Savior and LORD and were baptized in May 1986. Since then, God has been changing our lives from the inside out. The Lord also healed our marriage. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary this year.

How did you get started as a writer?
From the time I was a child, I knew I would be a writer. Because I didn’t know what I would write, I majored in English (emphasis in literary writing) and minored in journalism (emphasis on who-what-when-where-why). My parents had always been non-fiction readers. Rick’s family loved all kinds of books – and lots of fiction. Mom Edith loaned me novels and I loved them. On a dare (from Rick) I decided to write a combination of my favorite genres and wrote a “western-gothic-romance”. Romance novels were booming in the general market, publishers were on the look-out for new writers. My first manuscript sold and was published. I was hooked! I followed with eight or nine more (of what I call my B.C. (before Christ) books). They are all now out of print, are never to be reprinted, and are not recommended.

When I turned my life over to Jesus, I couldn’t write for three years. I tried, but nothing worked. I struggled against God over that because writing was my “identity.” It took that period of suffering “writer’s block” to bring me to my senses. God was trying to open my eyes to how writing had become an idol in my life. It was the place I ran to escape, the one area of my life where I thought I was in complete control. (Hardly!) My priorities were all wrong and needed to be put right. God first, husband and children second (we had three children by then) and third-- work. I prayed God would change my heart. My love for writing and reading novels waned and my passion for reading and studying God’s Word grew.

Rick and I began hosting a home Bible study. I began working with Rick in his business. The children came along and played in the office, hiding in the shipping popcorn. Writing ceased to matter. I was in love with Jesus and my husband and children. God never stops with the transformation process. We began studying the book of Hosea, and I sensed God calling me to write again – this time a romance about Jesus’ love for each of us. Redeeming Love was the result. It is the retelling of the Hosea story, set in Gold Rush-era California. After I turned it in, I wasn’t sure whether I would write anything more. I had so many questions about what it means to be a Christian, how to live for God, different issues that still haunted me. I felt God nudging me toward using my writing as a tool to draw closer to Him. I would ask my question, create characters that would play out the different viewpoints and seek God’s perspective. I began work on A Voice in the Wind. Writing has become a way to worship the Lord through story – to show how intimately He wants to be involved in our lives.

Where do you get your ideas for your plots?
Almost every story I have written since becoming a Christian has come from a question that regards a struggle in my own faith walk. The plot centers around the different ways that question can be answered by “the world” – but the quest is to find God’s answer. Here is a list of my novels with the questions that started each story:

• A Voice in the Wind: How do I share my faith with unsaved family members and friends who have no desire to read the Bible or hear me talk about my faith?
• An Echo in the Darkness: How many times are we called upon to forgive people who hurt us deliberately -- and (in many countries) would like to see us dead?
• As Sure As the Dawn: How do you deal with anger – especially when there is “good” cause? What is “righteous anger” and how does it look?
• The Scarlet Thread: What does “sovereignty” mean in man’s relationship with God? If He is in control of everything, what does that say about the bad things that happen to people?
• The Atonement Child: Is there complete forgiveness and restoration for a woman who has aborted her child? Does abortion have any effect on the woman and the man involved in the crisis pregnancy? Does it impact people around them? (This was my most painful and personal book because I needed to face and deal with my own abortion experience. The character of Hannah is based on my story; Evie is based on my mother’s.)
• The Last Sin Eater: What is the difference between guilt and conviction? This book came out of The Atonement Child. What I learned: guilt kept me imprisoned for years. Conviction sent me to my knees before the Lord where I received forgiveness and experienced His love and grace.
• Leota’s Garden: Are abortion and euthanasia connected? Is euthanasia merciful or an act of murder? This novel also came out of my work on The Atonement Child. While studying the abortion issue from all sides, I realized the arguments for abortion are exactly the same as those for euthanasia. While going through a post-abortion class with other women (one a nurse), I learned that the elderly are already at risk. One scene in the book continues to shock people. I wrote it for that purpose. I want people to understand life is precious. The movement toward legalizing euthanasia continues to gain momentum (and has less to do with “mercy” than saving money for care).
• And the Shofar Blew: What is a church? How do you build it? During my travels around the country and speaking at various churches, I saw many struggling through building projects and massive programs to draw more parishioners. Size of building and number of people in the pews seemed to define success or failure. Like a government out of control, the “church” (in many cases) has forgotten its foundation and purpose. Christ is the cornerstone. Believers meet together to study the Word of God, worship Him and encourage one another – and keep their doors and hearts open to those seeking God. Unfortunately, too many congregations have left their first love (Jesus Christ) and turned to idolatry (placing a building/drawing a crowd/being “politically correct” above a relationship with the Lord).
• Her Mother’s Hope / Her Daughter’s Dream: What caused the rift between my grandmother and mother? When my grandmother had a stroke, my mother raced from Oregon to the Central Valley of California to be with her. Grandma died before she arrived. My mother was heart-broken and said, “I think she willed herself to die just so we wouldn’t have to talk things out.” I have wondered since: What causes people (even Christians) to hold grudges? What might have brought resolution and restoration to these two women? Could my grandmother have loved my mother without my mother understanding it? The two books have many personal, family details woven in and I will be sharing this information in my blog.

Which is your favorite book of those you’ve written?
My favorite book is Redeeming Love. It was my first as a born-again Christian, my statement of faith, and the most exciting year I’ve spent writing anything. I felt God’s presence throughout the months of work, as though He were telling me His story through thousands of Scriptures as well as explaining the inner heart-ache and quest of each “my” characters.

Which book was the hardest to write and why?
The Atonement Child was the most personal and difficult to write because I had to face my own abortion experience. Added to the considerable research I did, and women who shared their experiences with me, I went through an intensive post-traumatic stress Bible study for post-abortive women at our local pregnancy counseling center. Reliving all aspects of my abortion decision and experience was excruciating – but healing. After twenty-six years of being imprisoned by guilt and shame, I was free through the power and love of God. Though the book was the most heart-wrenching to write, it also proved to be the most life changing. I’ve received countless letters from other post-abortive women and have learned my experience is not unique. Our nation is filled with wounded men and women. The character of Hannah is based on my story, Doug is based on Rick’s, and Evie is based on my mother’s.

Which character is your favorite?
My favorite character is Michael Hosea from Redeeming Love. He is like Jesus – the lover of my soul. I have another favorite: Hadassah from A Voice in the Wind. She is the kind of Christian I want to be.

What advice would you give to a new writer?
Write what you need to read. Write from your heart and. Write truth. Sometimes it hurts to peel away the layers of self-deception and see ourselves in the mirror, but it will also draw us closer to Jesus. And your work may minister to others struggling with the same issues. Read the Bible every day so that it will flow naturally into the story. Study the Bible from beginning to end. It is the most exciting reading in the world. It is also alive – and will help you recognize when you are entering into sin and need to realign yourself with the Lord. Keep your focus on Jesus.
Tell us about your current work.

I have just completed the second in a set of two books about mother-daughter relationship over four generations. This was intended to be one long novel dealing with the different ways generations have lived out their faith – but became so long it needed to be divided. Her Mother’s Hope will be released March 16, 2010. Her Daughter’s Dream will follow in September. There are numerous family and personal details woven into both books and I plan to share those things on my blog.

Easter paradox -- and earthquakes.

If you check my Easter blog for 2009, you'll see I'm writing about the huge Easter quake in Italy. This year it's in Southern California.

Ok, so we had a 7.2 Earthquake on Easter Sunday here in San Diego county.. 900 aftershocks followed. And today, q 5.2 in Calexico, just over the border from San Diego.

The world is going berserk.

66 Love Letters by Larry Crabb

66 Love Letters – A Conversation with God That Invites You into His Story reads as a two-way conversation with the author (who represents us with all our shortcomings and questions) and God.

Using the conversation as a backdrop, Dr. Crabb explains the emphasis in each book (love letter) of the Bible, and unfolds the unifying and underlying theme—the common thread that pulls each letter together and makes it practical to our lives.
Crabb highlights the human dilemma—our thirst to understand and resulting anxiety when we do not, our craving for emotional comfort and consequential confusion when there is none. His insight blows the fluff off of feel-good messages and exposes the core problem—our selfishness. He persistently points us to the only solution, the one seen in every book of the Bible, God’s Son.

My criticism of this work is that Dr. Crabb interjects some controversial viewpoints that are confusing and unnecessary. (For example, stating that Heaven is this earth remade—that would need a book to explain). But overall, I recommend this book for believers wanting to unpack the truths of the Bible in a simple way and to see the bigger picture beyond the nitty-gritty hard-stuff we often don’t “get”.

Sandra Bullock's Ongoing Saga

From Oscars and accolades galore to degradation and betrayal, Sandra Bullock's story seems like a fairy-tale in reverse.
Happily married to Jessie James (or so she thought), this last year was pivotal for Sandra. Her role as Leanne Tuohy in the award-winning movie, The Blindside, boosted Sandra's career--she won Best-Actress Award--and changed her life. Sandra was touched by Leanne's down-to-earth, feisty nature, and the way the Tuohys lived out their faith in Christ in a practical way: They adopted a homeless boy -- just as God adopts us.

The Blindside's huge success resulted in Sandra being whisked up in a whirlwind of glory. She was the new Julia Roberts. She won every heart. But before her crown had time to tarnish (and after lavishing praise on her husband for his support), her own heart was broken. Her husband turned out to be the new Tiger Woods--not in golf excellence but in adultery.

Jessie James has reportedly had eleven affairs while being married to Sandra--including with an exotic dancer from San Diego. Numbers aside, James not only betrayed Sandra--but also his daughter, Sunny (who Sandra went to battle for so James could get custody rather than the girl's porn-star, drug-abusing mother). Now Sandra and her precious stepdaughter may be separated, adding another wee broken heart in the mix.

What to make of all this? It's a spiritual battle. Sandra's heart was touched by the Tuohys. She was honored for playing a noble role, one that revealed Christ in action. Then poof! She discovers her husband is a cheat and she may lose the child she almost adopted.

All this gives us good reason to pray for Sandra. And for Sunny. And for all involved.

Americans Deported from Morocco – Forced to Abandon Orphans

When Eddie and Lynn Padilla moved to Morocco in 2006, they expected to stay for good, raising a family and helping orphans. They never dreamed that four years later they would find themselves and their two young children being escorted by police to a plane bound for America—leaving 34 crying orphans behind.

For two of those orphans, Samir and Mouhcine, the Padillas were the only parents they’d ever known. Eddie and Lynn were “Dad and Mom” and the two Padilla children were their beloved siblings. The family is now torn apart, trusting God for the welfare of the children who are now under the care of strangers.

The Padillas, originally sent out by Calvary Chapel Downy, worked with Village of Hope (VOH), an organization taking in orphans, many abandoned at birth because they were illegitimate—a despised stigma in Muslim Morocco. Unwanted babies are often discarded in hospitals or left in trash bags to die. Without structures like VOH, there is little hope of these children having a loving childhood.

VOH’s approach to helping orphans is to set up small, family units rather than huge, dormitory types of orphanages. House parents (or even a house family, as was the case of the Padillas) then foster no more than eight children, creating a real family nucleus.

The house-parents at VOH were from several countries including the UK, Holland, New Zealand, South Africa, America—and one family of converted Moroccans who fostered seven children under five years of age. The Padillas were the only Americans.

On March 6th at 3pm all the house-parents—including the Moroccan family—were ordered to leave the compound and the children. By 9pm, the Padillas found themselves on a bus headed for the airport escorted by police. They took their two biological children with them, leaving behind their belongings and beloved foster children. Samir, whose 2nd birthday was to be celebrated on March 8th, and his one-year-old brother, were left bewildered, scared and alone.

Some of the children in the homes have known their house-parents for ten years. They now find themselves with total strangers, longing for the loving embrace of their parents.

One little four-year-old girl doesn’t yet know her parents can no longer take care of her. She was taken to South Africa on a brief, permitted visit, and scheduled to return in April. She will return home to strangers – workers commissioned by the Moroccan government to take care of the children abandoned by a society that doesn’t value orphans.

This trauma began unexpectedly a few days prior to the deportation of the VOH workers when Moroccan government officials questioned the missionaries and the children. They then alleged that the house-parents were proselytizing to minors. However, their allegation lacked evidence, no trial was given and the decision was inexplicably irrevocable.

The puzzling piece in this drama is that the VOH compound was legal and legitimate. The missionaries had openly stated their standing as Christians, and had accepted the conditions placed on them by the Moroccan government. Those limitations included the requisite that the children were to learn about Islam as well as Christianity and to be well acquainted with the Muslim culture. The missionaries honored this stipulation to a tee, trusting that God would use their obedience and reveal Himself to the children.

So why were the workers ordered to leave without any proven misdemeanor? The Bible answers that question. We are in a spiritual battle. And the battle is worsening. Hostility towards Christians is increasing worldwide, and with it, hostility to children—particularly orphans. This is a time when we, the body of Christ, need to step up our prayer quota and stand in the gap for the children and the nations. Morocco’s children need our prayers more than ever—as do the children worldwide.
We worked with many Moroccan children in France. I knew a lot of Samirs and Mouhcines. We brought them to our Saturday Club and taught them about Jesus. (Parents gave there children over willingly, happy to have less to worry about for an afternoon.) My husband visited Morocco several times, and was touched by the faith of those who’d come to Christ—sometimes at the risk of their lives. Many practice Christianity in secret.

But in the case of the VOH workers, their faith was no secret, even though they heeded the government’s prohibition to proselytize. Parents like the Padillas showed the love of Jesus to the children and to all those around them. They lived it.

The Padillas are now in Colorado with family, trying to make sense of it all. They will soon have to look for jobs in a country where unemployment is at a high, while the need for missionaries in nations like Morocco has never been greater. But they are not the only ones who’ll need to look for jobs. So will the 24 Moroccan employees who worked at VOH who are now fired. Mercilessly left unemployed – while 34 children are left parentless.

“My children ask for the other children,” Lynn told me. “To them, home is in Morocco .” Then the sobering words of a loving mother whose heart has been broken, “I never even got to make Samir’s birthday cake”
But in spite of the pain, Eddie and Lynn have kept an eternal focus. They are praying that the Muslim workers who are now taking care of the children at VOH will search their hearts and ask themselves what this was all about. What caused these people to come here to take care of our abandoned children? They hope and pray God will use this tragedy for His higher purpose – that of drawing the nations to Himself. Yes, even nations like Morocco.

Pressing on for Haiti's Orphans

“There is a wide-open door for a great work here, although many oppose me” (1 Corinthians 16:9, NLT).

With earthquakes hitting Chile, Japan, Argentina, Taiwan . . . it’s easy to forget Haiti. But Haiti’s plight remains perilous. Not that God isn’t doing miracles—He is! People have been pulled from the rubble miraculously alive after days of water and food deprivation. Children are singing God’s praises (especially in places like Maison-de-Lumière and other Christ-centered children’s homes). Relief volunteers have arrived a-plenty. Yet, there are roadblocks. The orphanages are so jam-packed, orphans line up outside. Many struggle to survive in the streets and vulnerable prey to rapist.

The situation is further complicated because, in spite of an outpouring of funds into Haiti, relief supplies are being held up at the border (as the prohibiting orphans who were granted humanitarian parole the right to leave and join their waiting forever families wasn’t bad enough!). This due to . . . wait for it . . . the Haitian government’s exorbitant demands for taxes on these gifts sent to save their people.

This kind of ironic exploitation is not new. What is new is its magnitude and the lessons this chaos continues to teach us. Reaching children is spiritual warfare. We cannot reach them effectively in our own strength. We must invite God to be with us (which means we must be willing to move with Him at the steering wheel not our own plans). That’s why, in all our endeavors to help Haiti—or Chile or anywhere for that matter—those who take on the task of praying are as important as those who raise funds and those who go. Maybe even more so since they open the way!
Prayer reminds us that God alone must be our strength. He makes it possible for us to press forward praying, advocating, giving . . . to reach more children in the name of Jesus. Thanks to consistent prayer support and financial partnership, Orphans First is doing just that. We have also joined the Haiti Orphan Relief Team (HORT) because there is wisdom in partnering with like-minded people.

HORT initiatives aim to connect Haitian churches helping orphans with USA churches that can come alongside them—particularly in prayer.

As we seek to liaise churches in Haiti with churches in the USA, one of the biggest battles we will surely face is corruption. Sadly Haiti—like all third-world countries—reeks of corruption. We saw this in the case of the ten incarcerated Baptists whose lawyer demanded excessive money with promises for their quick release. I have also had my own share of such experiences as founding director of Orphans First. Amazing how many people claim to be helping orphans when they think there might be money to gain. Seen it again and again.

During a trip to Africa last year, a friend asked me to check out an orphanage her ministry was funding in Ghana. Delighted to help, we stopped by en route to Togo. We didn’t tell the “pastor” running the orphanage that we knew he received thousands of dollars every month or that we knew the people providing the money. He told us they needed funds, and had orphans in other parts of the country etc. I’ll spare the details, but let’s sum it up in one word: fraudulence!

Happily today someone trustworthy runs that orphanage. But the moral of the story remains. We need discernment. May God give us discernment to do the work He has set before us. And let’s not take forget Haiti where there are still thousands and thousands of orphans and hurting children needing protection and provision.

Lessons from Haiti & Helping Haiti's Orphans

Finally, one month after the earthquake, there’s talk about releasing the ‘Ten Baptists’ accused of attempting to abduct Haitian children after trying to bring them to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Like many people, I’ve watched this case incredulously and prayed. Prayed for The Ten; prayed for the children, and prayed that those of us involved in Haiti relief efforts would sharpen our ears to hear God and hopefully avoid unnecessary blunders.

I’ve also considered the multiple factors that complicate this issue.

My first thought was, Why aren’t the USA president and state department going to bat for these people? America has poured millions of dollars into Haiti since the earthquake took place last month – a catastrophe that’s estimated to have killed some 250, 000 people. You’d think they’d use their leverage to help free these people who obviously had good intentions, albeit with a shortage on wisdom.

But then I got thinking some more.

Haiti is known for its corruption. We got a whiff of this when The Ten fired their lawyer because he allegedly asked for $ 60, 000 in exchange for their release. This is to be expected. After all, that lawyer knew, as most people do, that America has raised millions of dollars for Haiti. Perhaps he wanted his piece of the pie. That is the way it works in most third-world countries and Haiti is no exception

But that doesn’t explain why America wasn’t more pro-active in defending their own. My friend, Doug Wead, offers some interesting insight on that issue. He suggests that the usual prejudice against Christians is probably at stake here.

(Certainly, given the fact that the Major of Lancaster, California was recently rebuked for making a statement about his area being predominantly Christian, and other similar instances, it is certainly true that even America has become increasingly hostile to Christianity.) Wead points out that Haiti wasn’t even on the media’s map before the earthquake. Yet, it has always been on the prayer map of Bible believers—which is why the Ten Baptists were there in the first place.

In spite of the good intentions of the Ten Baptists, I think their unfortunate incarceration has a lot to teach us. I can’t help thinking the situation could have been avoided from the get-go if the gal leading The Ten, Laura Silsby, had simply done her homework. You don’t try to take children out of any country without proper paperwork. Such a move would clearly ruffle some official feathers and opens a door for suspicion and attack.

Silsby apparently lacked good judgment. She apparently ignored sound advice when it was offered her—advice that might have saved a lot of people from a lot of trouble.

That can happen to the best of us. Still, I’m puzzled. When asked by journalists if she thought she owed an apology to the Haitian authorities, Silsby replied, “No!” – and that she was talking with them.

Why say “No!”? Why not simply apologize in humility for the sake of diplomacy, and testimony? After all, no matter how you look at it, she was wrong. Her heart may have had good intentions, but she acted wrongly. Doesn’t such an error merit an open gesture of remorse to sow peace? Maybe she just didn’t hear the question? Or maybe she thought she was “right” to withhold an apology – something that would seem to contradict sensible Christian ethics.

In some respects, the answers to “why” are not really our business; it’s not our place to judge. What is important is that we take heed and learn so that we can avoid unnecessary heartaches – to walk as wise as serpents and gentle as doves in our endeavors to serve our King (Mat.10:16). I think this story serves to remind us that wisdom is given as a gift to those who ask for it (James 1:5) – and that it is given so we don’t mess things up so much.

Lessons learned so far from the Ten Baptists’ mishap:
Seek advice, heed advice
Do your homework
Seek wisdom, & forethought
Be aware & beware of corruption -- & use extra foresight
Be humble, be teachable
Don’t judge people’s motives, but learn from their mistakes

Silsby’s lack of foresight unleashed an avalanche of problems (and I’m not just thinking of the other nine Baptists that naively followed her do-good intention who’ve spent almost two weeks in Haitian jail). Her decision has more than upset the apple-cart for hundreds – maybe even thousands – of orphans who were granted humanitarian parole to come to America. Since this incident, their exit has been jeopardized – prohibited by some nebulous red tape which requires that Prime Minister Bellerive personally evaluate each case to give his stamp of approval before a child can leave Haiti to join their waiting, adoptive parents.

Just how long will it take for Bellerive to investigate each case – and how much more money will that demand? Given that a normal Haitian adoption takes about three years, and is expensive, this new state of affairs does not look promising. Still, we must not give up hope, but keep praying. God has already done so many miracles during this crisis. He will do more.

One way God will bring about long-term solutions and miracles is through the unity of the body of Christ. Orphans First has partnered with Haiti Orphan Relief Team. We hope to achieve more together to help the children of Haiti than independently. I believe we will.

Here’s a story that, to the natural eye, seems to have fallen short of a miracle. But if you dig deeper, as this author did, it is a picture of redemption. I thought it appropriate to include it here. Adopted for life . . . and in death.

Oh, sweet Haitians, may the Lord comfort your broken hearts and nourish your bodies. May He wrap His loving arms around you and whisper His love deep into your hearts. And may He help us to humble ourselves, to give more of ourselves so that you may see more of Him. Amen.

I always knew sex and love are brain-related. This is Your Brain in Love – New Scientific Breakthroughs for a More Passionate and Emotionally Healthy Marriage by Dr. Earl Henslin confirms my hunch.

Henslin explains what happens in the brain when a person is in love, and why the initial intoxicating sensation fades. More importantly, he explains how to develop a satisfying marriage by recognizing your type and thus your potential brain hang-ups. It all starts in the brain.

According to Dr. Henslin brain imaging highlights the precise area where our hang-ups hang out. Identifying them helps us to learn how to bring our best brain into our marital relationship so that it sizzles—or at least satisfies.

Henslin describes five prominent lover styles: scattered lover (ADD), over-focused lover (living inside your head), blue mood lover (pessimistic, depressed), agitated lover (makes you walk on eggshells) and the anxious lover (overly stressed).

Explaining how brain patterns differ in these different types, Henslin shows how to regain lasting passion no matter what your lover type is.

As a pastor’s wife counseling women about marriage, I find this book practical and revelatory—useful to anyone who wants to enhance their marriage, or help others do just that.

Hope for Haiti's Orphans

If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday" (Isaiah 58:10).

As Haiti’s plight continues, more orphans are in peril. Yet, in the midst of madness, a glimmer of hope flickers. Orphans are being united with their forever families.

This little laughing angel is Rebecca, a beautiful Haitian orphan! (Well, actually that’s inaccurate. Passé. Rebecca is no longer an orphan. Since Monday, she joined her adoptive, forever family in America and is now the happy daughter of Kevin & Cara Boone.)

Like all Haitian adoptions, Rebecca’s adoption was a long process. (For those who are partners of the Orphans First Prayer Chain, you know how often we’ve prayed that this would change.) But, since the earthquake hit last week, amidst pandemonium and tragedy, miracles are taking place. Rebecca is one. And so are 25 other orphans now in America thanks to the tenacity of Cara Boone. In trying to get her own two Haitian children safely home, Cara opened a way for other orphans of the same orphanage. Says Cara:

“A miracle occurred on Monday when the orphanage we were adopting from in Haiti was the first to bring all 26 children home to the US. It was a miracle and it took around the clock working to make it happen, but God brought all of it together in the most amazing way. Now our two children that we have been in the process of adopting for the past 3 years, are finally home!

As our family revels in the joy of having them home, we feel compelled to not stop... just because we have ours home! We started out trying to save two children, God multiplied that effort by saving 26 and now we desire for Him to use us to save more.”

I believe God wants to bring a lot more Haitian children to America. I also believe, as I’m sure most people do, that He wants us to reach out

Sadly red tape and chaos still bar many orphans from coming swiftly to America. 133 children in Maison-des-enfants-de-Dieu have been stuck for days. Today, nannies struggled to lead (and protect) the children as they walked in precarious conditions from the orphanage to the American Embassy in Port-au-Prince only to be turned away because not all of the paperwork was in tact. (Hello, folks, a huge earthquake destroyed a lot of stuff you know).

Shockingly, the US Embassy provides neither food nor water for the orphans en route to America. So where is all the aid money going? (No comment except to encourage people to donate to reputable, Christian non-profits. Orphans First is one to consider. Details and donate button on the website.)

Children in another orphanage – Maison-de-Lumière, where Orphans First funds a feeding program – are safe so far, and teams are planning to go over and help. Meanwhile, the children are scared and need our prayers. Orphans First recently sent more funds for relief (thanks to donations). The biggest need though is to pray and ask God where/how we can help. We can’t all go to Haiti. Most can donate. But one thing we’re all called to do is pray.

For my part, I hope to join a bunch of Haitian orphans arriving in America at this time. I’m looking forward to hugging them, and talking to them (en français of course).

Heartache for Haiti

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world with thousands are orphaned, beautiful children. Since the recent catastrophe, thousands more are orphaned. Thousands injured. Thousands starving. Haiti’s plight is desperate.

So what are we gonna do?

You can sleep too much, eat too much, watch too much TV, do too much computer stuff -- BUT you can NEVER pray too much. Never. That answers part of the question as to what we’re to do: Pray!

For years subscribers to the Orphans First Prayer Chain have prayed over Haitian adoptions. We have watched God move and bring precious children home to their forever families. Adopting a child in Haiti often takes between 3 and 5 years. Let’s pray God uses this tragic disaster to open up adoptions and make them easier – at least for godly parents.

Orphans First has supported several orphanages in Haiti over the years and more recently a feeding program in Port-au-Prince. By God’s grace, we plan to increase this support.

"I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!" (Psalm 27:13-14).

Living with Confidence in a Chaotic World by David Jeremiah is by far one of the best and most relevant books to read in 2010.

With increasing terrorist attempts, political madness and an ever-plunging economic crisis, many of us are asking, “What on earth should we do now?”
Dr. Jeremiah’s book answers that question. Clearly. Simply. Biblically.

Written in a turn-page style, the book is laced with real-life stories that speak to our situation, and Scriptural truths that Dr. Jeremiah unfolds so we catch their potency. Limping Into 2010 -- with Faith

New Years Eve is a special time for my family. We write prayer requests for the coming year, and review those we wrote the year before. We look at what God has done. We rejoice in answered prayers – and those He has not answered in the way we had hoped. This annual review is a huge faith booster as there are always – always – some requests God has answered exceedingly above all we could ever ask or think.

This year, I’m stunned to see the precise way in which God has answered prayer. I’m equally amazed to see that some prayers I’ve prayed for years and, if I didn’t know better (doctrinally speaking), I’d think God was ignoring me. What I’ve noticed, though, is that over the years, my heart has changed. It has begun better aligning itself to God’s will, and ignoring (at least a little) my own.

This is because God does not always give me what I want. He doesn’t even always give me what I need – although sometimes He does. He gives me what He needs to give me to fulfill His purposes. And as I grow older, I love this.

As I look back over this year, even the past decade, I realize that I’ve been limping a lot. I have wounds. Life-stuff. People. Circumstances. Mostly just me. I am my own worst enemy because I get in the way of God’s plan when I don’t align my thoughts to God’s. But even though I limp a little, I am moving forward – by God’s.

This next year I want to move forward. I want to move Orphans First forward and move forward with my family, ministry, life . . . I want God to move me forward to be closer to Him. That will happen if I stop looking at myself and get up off the ground and, well, walk.

The best movie of the year was without question The Blind Side. I’ll see it next year again for sure.

One of my fave quotes this year is from a book I’ll be reviewing next year (uh, next year is almost here): The Bible is "the most rational, accurate, well-documented body of literature in the history of the world." --David Jeremiah.

Eyewitness reaches people who seldom go to church or read their Bibles.

Of the millions of Americans who don't go to church, 56 percent consider themselves Christian. If they knew what Jesus said and did, they would know the importance of networking and reaching out to help others. While Bibles sit on coffee tables and bookshelves at home, gathering dust, people pick up Eyewitness and don't want to put it down. Not only does it use language that is easily understood, it pulls readers into the story, almost like walking with Jesus in the first century.

About the Author

Frank Ball was the Pastor of Biblical Research and Writing at Anchor Church in Keller, Texas, for three years. After thirty years of research and teaching the life of Christ, he began a twelve-year project to analyze every gospel story about Christ and put the events into chronological order. Ball meticulously considered almost twenty resources, including the Greek and Hebrew texts, the opinions of other Bible writers, and different translations, to make sure his translation was correct. Using the gospel of John as the chronological backbone, he determined an appropriate time setting for every event.

Ball believes there is no greater role model than Jesus. The better we know him, the more we can be like him. “It’s impossible,” he says, “to love someone you don’t know. The Scripture arranged in this easy-to-understand order helps us to know Jesus. It allows us to be more of an ‘eyewitness’ to the events of Christ’s life, and in doing so, to be more like him.”

Ball has always been a great student, especially in math and the sciences, but hated English. He excelled in high school; however, because his family was impoverished, he was unable to attend college. After high school he took a menial job that supported his parents and siblings. In 1968 he married Kay and they had three sons. Kay passed away in 2005. Ball currently lives with his family in Fort Worth, Texas.

When personal computers became available, Ball embraced systems analysis and business administration. He devoured reading material on the high-tech industry and was a successful business executive until he made a commitment to full-time ministry in 2002.

In 1995, despite his dislike of English, Ball believed God was redirecting his life, and he devoted himself to writing—which has, ironically, become his passion. Knowing the challenges he faced without a secondary education, Ball became self-taught by voraciously reading books as if they were college texts. He studied as if he were preparing for tests.

Ball says that this project wasn’t his idea at all. He just had an unexplainable desire to do this chronology, and along the way he realized that God had a plan. Using his Eyewitness Stories version of the Gospels as a foundation, Ball assembled the gospel information, as well as more than two hundred other Bible verses from the Old and New Testaments, to create what he believes is the accurate order of events. Ball believes the combined stories resolve some of the discrepancies that some say exist in the Gospels.

1. The gospel stories have existed for some two thousand years. Why put them chronologically together now?
Nine out of ten Americans own a Bible, but the people who most need to hear the message don’t often read the book. They believe Scripture is outdated and too difficult to understand. Would they read the story of Christ if it were presented as a single story that is easy to understand? Most of them say they would, so Eyewitness answers that need.

2. Why do the Gospels appear to have conflicting stories?
At a crime scene, eyewitnesses always have different testimonies about what happened. Because each gospel writer had his own point of view and spoke to a different audience, the information is actually complementary, not conflicting. The apparent conflicts disappear when we use each viewpoint to compile a complete and compelling story.

3. How was writing and recording events different two thousand years ago?
We now use a computer keyboard to rapidly type and edit text that prints on our laser printers. In the first century, writers had only their parchment scrolls in which every word was hand written, one character at a time. Cut-and-paste editing and simple rearrangement of details into chronological order didn’t exist. Writers naturally put down information as it came to mind, giving us a flow of thought that isn’t always in date sequence.

4. What is the significance of John’s gospel being the last one written?
If John were to introduce his book to us today, he might say, “Let me tell you the rest of the story.” There wasn’t much need to repeat what had already been written, so he gives us clarification of events that were already being told and retold, as well as eyewitness reports that are found nowhere else. Unlike the other writers, who were not always chronological, John unfolds most of his story in date sequence in relation to the Jewish feasts. This gives us a chronological guide for putting all the biblical information in order.

5. In what way do you think the readers of Eyewitness will have a clearer understanding of the nature of God?
Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” If we can see what Jesus is doing and hear what he is saying, we become eyewitness of God’s nature. Because the words in Eyewitness are more like what we would read in a novel, readers are able to visualize themselves as present at the gospel events. It’s the next best thing to actually being there, walking with the other disciples.

6. How many different Bible translations were necessary to complete this project?
Hundreds of scholars have invested countless hours in the production of good translations. In the development of an easy-to-read wording for Eyewitness, translators’ handbooks and more than fifteen popular translations, as well as the Greek and Hebrew texts, were considered.

7. Is the Bible flawed in presenting the life of Christ in four separate books?
No, not at all. Each author’s report has its own perspective and meets a different audience need. Matthew points to the fulfillment of ancient prophecies to prove Jesus was the Son of God. Mark, the shortest of the Gospels, is the quickest to read. Luke, being a physician, gives many important details. And John adds clarity, chronology, and new information. Eyewitness was written for those who don’t read the Bible and for people who are helped by seeing how the story unfolded, chronologically.

8. Why do you think Eyewitness appeals to people who seldom attend church?
Even professed atheists and agnostics have questions about the meaning of life and what happens after we die. Eyewitness isn’t a book of difficult-to-understand rules that threatens punishment if we don’t do everything exactly right. The life of Christ is presented in a way so people can easily understand the value of loving our enemies and helping people in need.

How does the largest animal sacrifice relate to Orphans First?

What does the largest animal sacrifice in the world, Orphans First and tonight’s event here in Southern California have in common?

Recently, 250, 000 animals – including many bulls and lambs – were recently slaughtered in Nepal in some cruel frenzified ritual to appease one of the 300, 000 Hindu gods. Yep, this goddess requires blood.

And so does the real, Living God. Only He shed His own blood so that we could be free from the guilt of sin. The Lamb of God – Jesus, God’s son -- yielded His life to sacrifice so we could be saved by choosing Him. That is indeed freedom.
